Your Technical English Grade


Written Exam

8th February 2020, 08,00 - 09.30

Written examination of 90 minutes, no additional materials allowed.

 

Vocabulary (15 points)

  • Students should be able to define, discuss, explain and use vocabulary from all the Quizlet study sets (except for the one that´s called "Automotive Industry")

Grammar (15 points)

  • Students should be able to use modal verbs (including past modals) as well as the passive voice when writing texts and in gap-filling exercises   

Reading (20 points)

  • Students should be able to identify and correct errors in technical texts and answer questions about these texts, even if they contain unknown vocabulary  (0.5 points per line (there are 20 lines), 10 points for follow-up questions)

Writing (50 points)

  • Students should be able to write a summay of a scientific article

Abstract and Peer Review

In order to get all the points, the following tasks have to be completed:

 

Upload a first version of your abstract in your Office365 folder.

 

Proof-read two of your colleagues´ abstracts, comment on them and correct mistakes.

 

Polish your abstract and upload the polished version onto Office365. The dates and deadlines are listed in the Sessions section.

 

You´ll be given 10 points for writing and polishing your abstract and 10 points for the two peer reviews.


Oral Presentation

The oral presentations will be given during a mock conference. The date of the mock conference will be agreed upon with your teacher.

 

In pairs, choose one of the following industries or any other industry of your choice:

  • pulp and paper
  • petrochemical
  • construction
  • plastics
  • electronics
  • chemical
Use the Internet to get a first overview over "your" industry. Then think of a production process / machine  in the field you´ve chosen.

 

Prepare an interesting poster detailing this process / machine and a 7-10 minute poster presentation (both of you should speak). You should also talk about relevant health and safety issues.

 

On the day of the mock conference, every pair will present their poster and answer questions from the audience (= the other students).

 

Grading scale for poster presentations (20 %, respectively points of your final grade)

 

Organisation, structure, clarity (3 points)

  • Is your presentation (respectively your part) well-organised and easy to follow?

Delivery - body language, volume, speed, voice (2 points)

  • Are you a dynamic presenter?
  • Do you keep our interest by using the space available, using appropriate gestures, speaking at an easily understandable pace and volume, highlighting important points with your voice?

Language use I: Range, accuracy, pronunciation (5 points)

  • Is it easy to understand you because you have chosen words you understand and can pronounce correctly?
  • Can you show a good range of spoken English? Points will be deducted for reading!
  • Do you use the appropriate technical vocabulary?
  • Do you use signposting language and linking words?
  • Do you stress words in the right places and intonate appropriately?

Language use II: Grammar (3 points)

  • Do you use appropriate grammar structures?
  • Do you make a lot of basic grammar mistakes?

 Feedback and questions (2 points)

  • Do you encourage questions?
  • Do you deal with feedback professionally?

 Poster (5 points)

  • Does your poster have a title which summarises the main idea?
  • Is your poster focused and simple?
  • Does every section have a clear heading and is Information well-arranged and explained using diagrams, charts and/or pictures?
  • Have you used different font sizes and colours consistently?

Participation

All other participation activities will happen in our Facebook groups and in the Blog.

 

Your teacher will post questions, tasks, etc. regularly. Each task is worth a certain number of points (e.g. 10, 5 or 2 points - this information is added to your teacher´s posts). You won´t have to complete every single task / comment on every post. You can earn a maximum of 200 points out of at least 400 possible points - in order to pass participation, you´ll need more than 100 points.

Please visit your Facebook group / the Blog regularly - this is your opportunity to practice and receive feedback from your teacher. Your posts will not be graded - even if they contain mistakes you´ll get the full number of points if you´ve made an effort. Copying other students´ posts however is not enough to earn points. Good comments and discussions will also be rewarded.
